Workshops

There were three workshops at this year's Annual Meeting.  Descriptios below.

Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.:

"Weigh-in-Motion'

Session Leader: Randy Woolley, Caltrans, Div. of Research & Innovation

Weigh trucks at freeway speeds?  Can you do that?  Can you weigh my car too?  What is "Virtual Weigh-in-Motion"?  This workshop will share the results of the AASHTO TIG WIM Lead States work and answer these questions and more.  The Technology Implementation Group (TIG) of the American Assoc. of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) shares high-payoff, market-ready technologies through its Lead States Teams.  The TIG promotes technological advancements in transportation, sponsors technology transfer, and encourages implementation of these technologies.  TIG chose Virtual Weigh-in-Motion (VWIM) as a focus technology because several States sparked a non-traditional use: wirelessly linking WIM information to a highway patrol officer's laptop computer in his/her vehicle.  The application of "virtual technologies" demonstrates an innovative approach to solving size and weight enforcement issues that range beyond the traditional WIM role in data collection and vehicle classification.

Monday, Dec. 3 at 3:30 p.m.:

"Legislative Outreach - Effectively Positioning ITS in the Legislative Arena"

Session Leaders: Russ Bogh, State Assemblyman and Jackie Golob, Delcan

In 2007, the ITS industry was mystified when ITS was passed over for billions of dollars in funding resulting from voter approved infrastructure bonds.  As a result, ITS California reinforced its commitment to on-going outreach efforts focused on increasing awareness of ITS in the legislative arena.  This workshop has two primary purposes.  First, former State Assemblyman Russ Bogh will present a workshop designed to educate participants on how to effectively gain influence into the State's legislative arena.  Assemblyman Bogh's presentation will be followed by an unveiling of ITS California's 2007 Outreach Plan, including the roll out of a presentation that will provide member organizations with a tool to use when talking to elected officials.  This workshop is free of charge and is open to employees of all ITS-CA member organizations.  All attendees not registered for the ITS-CA Annual Meeting are required to show membership credentials in order to get an event pass at the meeting registration desk.  Senior managers, business development personnel and members of your legislative and marketing staffs are highly encouraged to attend.

Tuesday Dec. 4 at 2 p.m.:

"The FHWA Funding Process - Systems Engineering Requirements"

If you are expecting to use FHWA funds for an ITS project, you need to understand the process for obtaining those funds.  For Local Agencies (cities, counties, etc.), the process may include one or two systems engineering steps -- depending upon the type of ITS project.  At this workshop, you will learn how to identify the type of your project, what procedures are required for each project type, and how to navigate those procedures quickly and efficiently.  You will also learn several ways to make your project more successful.  The workshop will be led by California's two FHWA ITS engineers - Frank Cechini and Jesse Glazer.  There will be time to discuss your project during and after the worshop.  You will also receive a free copy of the new Systems Engineering Guidebook for ITS.
